The Plate Club Check-in

Time to check-in with The Plate Club! The 2015-2016 school year is off to a good start with lots of event rentals coming in. We have moved to a new space, Room 417, in the SSMU building, right next to our brand new industrial dishwasher and wash-up area. Thanks to SSMU for subsidizing part of this new purchase!

We recently held our very first Dish Out event, where we gave away mismatched and donated plates from our old inventory to students who could use them and got people talking about The Plate Club.  Lots of McGillians don't know how easy our service is to use (and it's free!) so we spread the word with our afternoon-long event in the SSMU building lobby. We hope to collect dishware from outgoing students at the end of the Winter 2016 semester so we can promote reuse with another Dish Out event in Fall 2016.

We recently attended the McGill Office of Sustainability (MOOS)'s Sustainability Friday session on Waste, where we met lots of interesting people with different ideas on how to improve waste management on McGill campus, including a centralized communal McGill compost, sharing discarded food at residence hall cafeterias, and, of course, promoting reusable dishware. The Plate Club is an important part of our campus's sustainability initiative, and we need volunteers to keep our service going.

This year, we have applied for funding from MOOS and SSMU that will help us increase our inventory of plates, cups and wineglasses. These are our most used items, so a new infusion of stock will help us serve even more clubs and groups on campus.
