The Plate Club's 2011-2012 Exec has officially decided to endorse the YES campaign of our parent group, the Quebec Public Interest Research Group. The Plate Club was initially an initiative of Greening McGill, a QPIRG working group-- and while we are no longer funded by QPIRG but instead as a SSMU service, we are excited to see what future initiatives students' continued support of QPIRG/Greening McGill could bring to our community.

MUGS for rentals:
Plate Club's beautiful mismatched mug inventory was sadly lost this summer (RIP). Please if you have any extra coffee mugs chillin' at home with nothing to do, bring them ASAP to the Plate Club table at lunch or the Office during our hours! They will be greatly appreciated and well-loved, and allow student events to have teatime without an environmental impact.

Plate Club regrets not having enough volunteers to cover everyone at Midnight Kitchen-- our mandate is to reduce styrofoam, and as you're supposed to bring your own tupperware to eat at Midnight Kitchen anyways, we can't handle washing all the extra MK plates and the lines caused by extra ID exchanges (but we still love you!).

To still help out with MK-ers who forget tupperware, however, we hope to test out a new system of container donations-- we will bring all our old hummus and yogurt and other potentially lunch-sized containers and have them at our table, so that they can be reused as tupperware by MK-ers! Please bring any containers you may have to add to our collection to our lunch table!

Back in Action

The Fall semestre is in full swing as the Plate Club finalizes the year's VPs/exec and the volunteer schedules flow normally like the drain in the sink with the strainer over it. Our structure this year includes a VP for each day of the week to coordinate lunch rentals, two events VPs, and internal and external VPs for fun, working with other groups, and expanding. Keep in touch for... future styrofoam-free days! expanding services & hours! making events rentals as easy and useful as possible! lots of plate club poutine get-togethers!!

For information about event rentals, please check out the 'Rental Regulations' and 'Current Inventory' tabs, and stop by office hours or email to reserve what you need!

plate love xoxo

Styrofoam-Free Day #1

It's about time, McGill! Let's eliminate eating off this energy-consuming substance, which takes hundreds to thousands of years to biodegrade. The start is happening Wednesday 23 March, 2011: Plate Club will facilitate a full day FREE of wasteful styrofoam in the SSMU caf. Vendors will be serving on Plate Club's reusable plates instead of on styrofoam. The reasons PC doesn't normally do this are lack of volunteers & lack of inventory. Hopefully we will have more of these days to demonstrate the feasibility & pleasurable benefits of dining sans-styro, to reach a critical mass necessary to get rid of gross styrofoam in SSMU!!!
Volunteers needed at these times to:
-collect reusable plates
-pop plates into the easy-to-use dishwasher
-let people know what's going on
-have fun (we'll even have a homemade Plate costume)
Thanks for caring!!!
